NEXT MEETING - BRS PROGRAM ON NOVEMBER 26, 2019 features Mark Carlson. See his bio below.

A"hands on" pruning demonstration will follow Mark Carlson's speech presentation.  Each table will have a rosarian explain how to prune and when.

Our speaker, Mark Carlson, is a certified landscaper, horticulturalist, and master pruner who has applied his skills for over 30 years. He resides in Northern California, where both he and his wife were born and raised. Mark has agreed to share his knowledge about the pruning of roses with us at our November meeting, which is the last meeting before we start our pruning fund- raiser in January.

Growing up on a family farm in Durham, Mark had cows, chickens, almonds, and a small truck garden and his mom was always planting things including roses. In high school, Mark took botany and drafting, and did yard work for neighbors which was his first “green industry” interest. He graduated from Chico State in 1969 with a B. S. degree in Ornamental Horticulture having worked with roses, trees, bedding plants, greenhouse growing and landscape.

From 1970 to 1973, Mark worked at the Cupertino Nursery and Florist with a very knowledgeable staff as they sold hundreds of roses and Mark expanded his knowledge of roses. It was at this time he was awarded “California Certified Nurseryman”.

Moving back to Chico, he joined Lamb and Rice Landscaping where he did mostly installations and rebuilding existing landscapes, although his “thing” was rose care and planting. Getting his own contractor’s license in 1978, he drew plans for clients and builders and then installed the landscaping. Reconnecting with Lamb, they created Lamb and Carlson Landscape doing all kinds of landscape maintenance, including various rose gardens, until 2008.

His philosophy is to help everyone who wants to learn what he has learned in the Green Industry over the years. This has led him to create DVD’s about roses and fruit trees that he sells on the internet at secondleaves.com. Mark says he has always helped friends, and friends of friends, with their roses and fruit trees because this is something he really enjoys.

Today he manages 200 acres of almonds for his wife and her sisters, but still has time to help with landscaping for friends. Besides using parts of his DVD on pruning at our meeting, Mark will be bringing in large rose bushes to prune as a demonstration. Bring your pruning questions to the meeting!!
